Dr. Mendelson's lifting (Spacelifting) is a new philosophy in plastic surgery proving that rejuvenating surgery can be not only effective, but also less traumatic
A classic circular facelift is a surgery that age-specific patients typically choose. But, as we all know, sometimes manifestation of age-related changes does not always correspond to one's actual age. Deeper nasolabial folds, excess skin on chin and neck, loss of definition in facial contour and pronounced ptosis may indicate not age, but a genetic predisposition or individual anatomical features.
Is it worth waiting years to get rid of all age-related aesthetic concerns? Not really, as plastic surgery now offers a less-traumatic and effective solution like Mendelssohn’s lifting, or Spacelifting, which can halt the process of visible ageing for a long time!
Spacelifting is based on physiology: during the procedure, the specialist identifies and tightens soft saggy tissues without disturbing the dense, stronger ones. Based on personalised approach, this technique is safer than a standard circular facelift, and the recovery process is faster and easier.
The rejuvenating effect of Spacelifting is preserved for up to 10 years.
The effect of the Spacelifting technique is based on the scrupulous following of facial and neck area anatomy structures. In fact, our face is kind of “pie,” with spaces filled with looser tissue between dense layers. There are no large vessels or nerves in these “gaps.” With age, it is in these spaces that tissue shifts occur – they are the ones coming out, with visual sagging as a result. These shifts cause large wrinkles and creases in the area of the lower third of the face.
The innovation behind Dr. Mendelson's lifting is that he suggested making surgical interventions exclusively in “empty” spaces: The surgeon detects them with the help of endoscopic equipment, sets the lowered tissues into their original position and fixes them in the right place. As a result, the face shape becomes more defined and natural, just like in the patient’s younger years.
The Spacelifting technique is physiological and safe: with the following method of tightening there is no need for invasive skin detachment, like with SMAS-lifting that is very popular at the moment. Therefore, there is no risk of large vessels or facial nerves damage.
The minimal risk of trauma during surgical intervention allows to carry out other rejuvenating procedures simultaneously with Spacelifting: blepharoplasty, platysmaplasty, endoscopic forehead lift. On average, the surgery lasts 2 to 3 hours.
INDICATIONS
Spacelifting is recommended to anyone who is concerned about the age-related changes in their face and neck areas:
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Spacelifting has no particular contraindications. Standard limitations applied to all surgical interventions must be taken into consideration:
Dr. Mendelson's lifting is performed under general anaesthesia, so in addition to a set of standard blood and urine tests, it is necessary to make an ECG and obtain approval for the surgery from an anaesthetist. During the first meeting, your plastic surgeon will assess the condition of the skin, the severity of the ptosis, decide in which areas require correction, show where the stitches will be located and give necessary recommendations for preparation for intervention. If the patient wants to perform several surgical procedures at once – for example, adjust the nose tip, lip shape or make a correction of the body – this should also be discussed immediately with the doctor as Spacelifting can be combined with other surgical procedures. It is also important to report any medications that the patient is taking on a permanent basis – they will be included in the individual treatment regimen.
The patient comes to the clinic in the morning, on an empty stomach, signs in to the ward, and gets dressed in the gown. The surgeon draws necessary markings on the patient, and then the patient is escorted to the operating room. The surgeon makes several short cuts – no more than 1 to 3 cm. They are required to provide access to the endoscope. It is under the endoscopic control that the correction is made in deep layers. The cuts and sutures will be placed in the pre-furrow and in the earfold, only with 1 to 2 cm extending into the temporal area. This area is hidden by hair, so only very few will realize that the patient has resorted to surgery at all. The endoscopic technique helps the surgeon to make local interventions, without disturbing large vessels and nerves, gently pulling and fixing tissues in their original position. With that, all elements like fat packets and facial muscles can be repositioned, not just the skin. They are returned to their original state and are no longer prone to age-specific ptosis. The result lasts for many years. This intervention can be combined with forehead tightening, blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, placing of facial implants and/or lipofilling. You can get Spacelifting procedure without waiting for drastic age-related changes, even at a rather young age. The advantages of the surgery are its being a low-injury risk procedure and it’s preventive capacity; it allows for long-term slowing of aging processes and characterized by a very short rehabilitation period. The intervention itself lasts at maximum of 3 hours, even in complex cases. Most often, no more than two hours are required.
The face-lifting based on Mendelson’s technique is based on a highly effective way of rejuvenation; at the same time, it does not entail long and painful rehabilitation. A fixing bandage is put on the patient straight after the surgery, similar to a dressing-mask, which is usually removed in 2 or 3 days, upon surgeon’s approval. There is no need to use drainage pipes, unlike with mainstream face-lifting techniques. It is better to be under the supervision of clinical staff on the first day post-op, and the next day you will be allowed to return home. Patients do not observe significant pain and swelling after Spacelifting. Minor swelling of the cheeks and neck, as well as small bruising in the same areas tend to disappear approximately on day 5. In general, it is possible to return to normal lifestyle within 10 days after the surgery. By this time, all sutures are usually removed. For the first 7 to 10 days, it is recommended to limit facial movements and sleep on a higher pillow than usual, opting for position on the back- this is very important. Doing so will prevent swelling, straining the sutures and painful sensations. In addition, it is better to exclude mechanical and thermal procedures performed on the face such as massage, taking high-temperature baths, invasive cosmetological procedures and limit intensive physical activity.
